My hope, and indeed expectation, for 2011 is that Ed Miliband will set out the principles on which the Labour Party's policy is to be based and thereby re-create a genuinely social-democratic party of conscience and conviction. I also hope that Sarah Palin becomes the irresistible presidential choice of the Republican Party – thus guaranteeing President Obama's re-election. My wish that disenchanted ultra-Blairites would stop sniping at the Labour leader will not be granted. My personal resolutions are to eat less and to avoid being diverted from my next book by journalism. Neither will be kept.
