Coalition plans end of child detention
Children of failed asylum seekers will no longer be detained from May next year.
By New Statesman Published 16 December 2010
The detention of the children of failed asylum seekers is set to finish next year, according to the government.
The policy had been a key part of the Liberal Democrat manifesto and has since been adopted by the coalition government.
Under the current system, children of failed asylum seekers are held in secure locations, along with their parents. While parents facing deportation will still be held in secure houses, their children will be assigned minders, allowing them a more normal upbringing.
The oft criticised Yarl's Wood detention centre in Bedfordshire will be closed as part of the proposals.

Oh, Lovely! So instead of locking these children up, we will deprive them of their parents. You nasty, unfeeling scumbags.
