At least 100 people dead after fire in Dhaka

Deadly flames in densely populated area of Bangladeshi capital engulf seven buildings.

More than 100 people are dead after a fire in a densely populated part of Dhaka, the Bangladeshi capital.

The fire broke out in the old district of Nimtoli after an electrical transformer exploded. Housing blocks and shops caught alight.

The district is difficult for the emergency services to navigate, due to narrow roads and a high density of buildings. Many people live in badly constructed, multi-storey buildings with no fire escapes.

At least seven buildings were on fire, according to fire fighters, who now say that they have now got the blaze under control.

Fires in Dhaka are a common occurrence, but this was the largest for many years, and claimed the most lives.
