Do not vote tactically, says Tony Blair
Former prime minister urges voters to back the party they believe in.
By New Statesman Published 05 May 2010Tony Blair has urged people to reject tactical voting, and back the party they believe in, as the election campaign enters its final day.
Speaking to the Guardian, after cabinet ministers Ed Balls and Peter Hain appeared to endorse tactical voting, the former prime minister dismissed the Liberal Democrats as "the old politics masquerading as the new".
He said: "It is simple. Vote for what you believe in. If you think their polices are good, vote for them, but if you don't, don't. The Lib Dems are not going out to people and saying 'vote Labour' - they are trying to take seats off us."
The leaders of the three main parties are campaigning across Britain, as election day approaches in what looks set to be the closest vote in years.
It has been reported that up to half of voters have yet to decide who to vote for.
