Gordon Brown, David Cameron and Nick Clegg are preparing for the second televised leaders' debate, this time on foreign affairs.

The live debate comes as Clegg faces a series of hostile stories from the right-wing press. Today's Daily Telegraph reports that political donations were paid into his private back account in 2006, before he became Liberal Democrat leader. The paper claims that three donors paid up to £250 a month into Clegg's account.

Clegg denies any wrongdoing and the party says he is being "smeared" because of his success in the first debate. A Lib Dem spokesman said: "We believe that a concerted effort at political smear is under way but we are confident the public will see it for what it is, a kickback by vested interests against the prospect of change."

The second 90-minute debate will be shown live on Sky News from 8pm and presented by the channel's political editor Adam Boulton. Unlike the first debate, which was shown only on ITV1, it will be simultaneously screened on Sky 3 and the BBC News Channel.

The debate is likely to focus on Britain's continued military presence in Afghanistan and relations with the European Union.
