The company believes the six-month trial will woo over the rural homes and increase its coverage in rural areas by at least a million. It plans to deliver speeds of 50 Mbps initially.
There are approximately 25 million homes in the UK. Virgin is currently available in about 12 million homes.
Virgin Media's chief executive officer Neil Berkett hopes the trial will provide a new way to extend next-generation broadband services.
If the trial is successful, Virgin would be able to extend its ascendancy over BT to rural areas too. Virgin already has the better network speed of the two.
