His profile @hujintao on t.people.com.cn reads as: "General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, Chinese President and Chairman of the Central Military Commission." Before the microblog disappeared, it had gained more than 16,000 followers and over a thousand comments.
A brief note on the empty site read as: "This item cannot be found, the author may have erased it."
Newspapers reported that the site crashed because of the sudden traffic surge at the rate of 1,000 people an hour.
The reports also said a recent upgrade created an automatic microblog for anyone who had registered in the website's chatroom. The president had registered for an online conversation with the public on 20 June 2008.
President Hu had not yet posted a single blog before the site disappeared. His microblog had been confirmed as genuine, according to the Global Times.
