Figures would give Conservatives a Commons majority of 106

The Conservatives have maintained their convincing poll lead over Labour after a month in which Gordon Brown was damaged by the news that the economy remains in recession.

The ICM/Sunday Telegraph poll put the Tories down two points to 42 per cent, with Labour also down two to 25 per cent and the Liberal Democrats up three points to 21 per cent. If repeated at a general election, the figures would give the Conservatives a Commons majority of 106.

There is better news for Labour in Scotland with a new poll showing voters returning from the Scottish National party (SNP).The YouGov poll, commissioned by the Scottish Green party, asked voters who they would back on a constituency and a regional level.

The former poll saw the SNP fall two points to 34 per cent, with Labour up three points to 31 per cent, the Conservatives unchanged on 16 per cent and the Liberal Democrats also unchanged on 14 per cent. The latter poll put the SNP and Labour neck-and-neck on 29 per cent, with the Tories dwon one point to 16 per cent, the Liberal Democrats up two to 14 per cent and the Greens unchanged on 6 per cent.
