Jon Bernstein, the former multimedia editor for Channel 4 News, is appointed deputy editor

Jon Bernstein will join the New Statesman as deputy editor on 12 November. He succeeds Emily Mann, who will continue to work part-time on the magazine while she completes a PhD in art history.

Jon Bernstein is the former multimedia editor for Channel 4 News, where he led the programme's expansion online. He joined ITN in the run-up to the 2005 general election as editor of Channel 4 FactCheck, a pioneering website which put politicians' claims to the test. Before that, he worked in the eGovernment Unit at the Cabinet Office, where he was part of the senior project team that launched Directgov, the website of the UK government. And as editor-in-chief of the business and technology website silicon.com, he was instrumental in launching the service in the UK, Germany and France. He spent much of the 1990s working in magazines for VNU Business Publications.

Jason Cowley, New Statesman Editor, said:

"I am delighted that Jon is joining us at what is a time of reinvigoration and renewal for the New Statesman, both in print and online. He impressed me with his enthusiasm and online expertise; he has the exactly the right set of skills that we were looking for. These are challenging times and Jon's talents will help our readers, online and in print, stay ahead of the debate and properly informed about the issues that matter."

Jon Bernstein said:

"I'm delighted to be joining a well-loved title with an extraordinary heritage. I am very excited by the prospect of working with such a talented team. The New Statesman has a terrific reputation for setting the agenda and I am looking forward to helping Jason and his team develop this further and not only in print, of course, but especially online."
