NS wins awards for international coverage and No Place for Children campaign

The New Statesman triumphed at last night's Amnesty International Media Awards, winning the consumer magazines category for our No Place for Children campaign.

The awards celebrate the achievements of journalists who cover human rights abuses around the world. No Place for Children was co-ordinated by Alice
O'Keeffe
and exposed the treatment of children who pass through the UK's immigration detention centres.

Also nominated in the same category was NS contributing writer Edward Platt, for his coverage of the troubles in Gaza ( "The conflict within Hamas" and "Killings, shootings and checkpoints are our children's curriculum").

Channel 4, BBC Radio 4 and the Guardian were among the other award winners. For a full list of recipients, click here.

The New Statesman has also won the 2009 Utne Independent Press Award for best international coverage. In their citation, the judges singled out our Travels column for its "beautifully written" pieces that "routinely peer into little-known cultural phenomena around the world". Utne Reader is the leading guide to the alternative and independent press, surveying 1,500 publications internationally.
