Greater Manchester Police get heavy with New Statesman writer

  • Posted by Martin Bright
  • 19 March 2008

Regular New Statesman contributor Shiv Malik was this morning visited by Greater Manchester Police in connection with an ongoing investigation.

He was served with a production order to disclose journalistic material, including notes, recordings and a book manuscript concerning radical Islam in Britain. If he refuses he could face criminal charges.

Shiv has written several brilliant pieces for the New Statesman about Islamic radicalism and the terrorist threat and has been consulted by the government on his views.

We at the New Statesman will back him in any action he decides to take.

Read Shiv Malik's articles for the New Statesman here.

the police are knocking on normal journalists doors, and arresting them if they do not hand over their journalistic integrity.

Journalistic integrity isn't that an oxymoron.

Never met one who wasn't a right wing t*****r.

Before all you fellow travellers defend the profession remember the only opposition to Thatcher in the eighties were some latex puppets not journos.

Martin this article is very close to Tory Nick's article in the Observer.

You are not working as a team are you.

Not suprising as you are part of the Observer circle.

Shame I warming to your independence

No, I agree with Martin here.

However flimsy journalistic oversight of politicians may or may not be, it is worth defending journalists from police intervention of this sort.

However worried about Islamophobia one may be, it is worth facing up to the issue of radical Islam as well. I have known people who have been involved with these groups in Pakistan, and they are not even slightly funny.

NoTag old boy I feel any journalist or member of the public should say what they like and be given the opportunity. So I have nothing against the points made in the article. It is just very strange that Tory Nick and Martin seem to be carrying out "buddy" journalism.
