The task is ours

Riaz Ahmad (Letters, 11 February) writes that "50 per cent of the world goes to bed hungry every night, yet he [God] does not even bat an eyelid".

Does your correspondent seriously imagine that God expects us to wallow selfishly in our luxurious lifestyles, while He automatically provides manna from heaven for the hungry? World hunger could be eradicated once the rich nations accept that their own living standards are unnecessarily high and decide to tackle the problem seriously. There is enough food to feed the world several times over.
