Zac responds to Sian Berry

Zac Goldsmith

Published 19 September 2007

Last week the Green Party's Sian Berry criticised the Tory Quality of life group report. Here Zac Goldsmith, who co-chaired the group, accuses her of a Labour-style attack.

Sian Berry complains that when the Conservative Party's Quality of Life report was released, she spent much of the day "commenting on how disappointing it was." That's odd, given that she hadn't seen or been briefed on the report.

Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, the Soil Association, WWF, ChristianAid, the Green Alliance, the Renewable Energy Association and many others have issued highly supportive press statements about the report. Why? Because it represents the biggest and bravest attempt by any mainstream political Party yet to tackle the environmental crisis we face.

Briefly - despite what she says - our extra tax on dirty cars will be matched by discounts on clean cars. Some of the proceeds of our tax on short haul flights will be used to improve the rail alternatives. Hypothecation is a key part of our report.

Berry complains that our taxes will harm the poor. In fact at every turn we have ensured the opposite. The report is about making it easier and cheaper for everyone to make the green choices currently only available to the wealthy.

Contrary to her bizarre statement that we advocate expansion of the aviation industry, we propose a moratorium on new airport extensions. And contrary to her claim that we provide 'implicit backing for nuclear', we propose the removal of all direct and indirect subsidies for nuclear power as well as the introduction of a waste heat levy - whose principle purpose is to incentivise investment in a decentralised energy infrastructure.

I could go on rebutting her extraordinary claims. But there's a much more important point to raise: why on earth - when presented with the most thorough environmental policy review ever conducted by a mainstream UK Party - is the Green Party's immediate response to launch a Labour-style attack?

It just doesn't make sense.

My message to the Green party is simple; the environment is too important an issue for turf wars. Green voters know you won't win the next election.

That's not why they vote for you. They expect you to raise the debate, to celebrate and encourage best practice wherever it appears. They categorically don't want you to make it even harder for mainstream Parties to act.

Best practice includes making changes to legislation that will bring about real changesin the our emissions of climate-changing gases. Simple economics dictates that this requires far more money than is currently being obtained through taxes. Therefore any attempt to tackle climate change must be met by a rise in overall taxation. This is not conservative policy and this is why the conservative party will not win another election.

Oh- and I see you haven'ty actually responded directly to any of Sian's criticisms on nuclear subsisidies, removal of renewable generation targets, increased international flights, etc.. You've simply rejected her conclusions in typical playground style.

And anyway - the rich b*stards who vote Tory will simply ask for more pay in order to cover any tax increases etc - ending up with the sum total of:

Zero. And a lot of inflation. So actually, less than zero. Thanks for the Zac. What a lovely man.

ZAK...you are a lightweight....you are the "Bin Laden" of global warming, as Bin Laden is the NWO pide piper of young Muslim men. You are an illusion, for that is what you sell.

I challange you Zac Goldsmith...for the next month, you must attack the "cruise line industry".. every day, thats right, forget about cheap airlines.lol Stop using Ryanair as an elite distraction...focus on the 160,000 tonne Independence of the Seas....she starts service in Southhampton next May. Don`t worry Zac, Project Genesis will weigh in at 220,000 tonnes and will start service in 2009....come on Zak...pull that elite finger out , show us how green you can be. If we don`t hear Zak Goldsmith attack the cruising industry for the entire month of October, the we will know he`s has a very specific agenda to attack green issues affecting the middle and poor sectors of society...much like Ken`s congestion charge...taxing the poor.

Zak, here`s a tip, google "HAARP".....this will lead you to global warming NWO style.lol

I'm a member of the Green Party and I didn't think the Quality of Life report was all bad at all, rather the fact that the Conservatives immediately started to distance themselves from it when the right wing (majority?) of the party attacked it. I don't think Sian was disappointed by the report itself, more the lack of political will from the Conservatives. As for 'turf wars', well yes, but it's the same from every political party over every single issue - just look at the Tories' pathetic reaction to the Northern Rock thingy - not that that excuses it.
