Ambiguous butt

Your review of La Mélancolie de Zidane by Jean-Philippe Toussaint (Books, 18 December) said it describes the World Cup head-butting incident as "novelistic in its ambiguity". I think the same might apply to Margaret Beckett's reply concerning the main legacies of the Blair years. "I could say anti-conflict," she said. Yes, you could. But only if Zinédine Zidane had just unleashed one of his specialities on you and you were feeling ambiguously novelistic.
