1. Puff puff
Passengers on Romania's fastest train service, the Blue Arrow, were surprised when the driver stopped the train to take a cigarette break, announcing: "Passengers may get off now; we'll take a five-minute break." He faces disciplinary action.
2. Snakes and baddies
A Serbian pet-shop owner who kept a 6ft python inside his Mercedes to ward off thieves was arrested after it escaped. Radovan Darkic said that he wanted to ensure revenge on anyone who robbed him.
3. Back to the future
Police in Western Australia arrested a man attempting to reverse 310 miles down the Great Eastern Highway. The driver claimed that his transmission had failed and he had no option. He was charged with reckless driving.
4. Thighs of relief
A judge criticised Morrisons supermarket for pursuing a case in which two women were accused of stealing chicken thighs worth £1.84. The cost to the taxpayer was £30,000. The case was thrown out through lack of evidence.
5. Armed with the facts
A mother who kept forgetting the birthdays of her five children has had them tattooed on her arm. Vanda Jones, from Penygroes in Wales, now has a ready answer when questioned about their ages at the health clinic.
