Where were you?

Published 09 October 2006

Five things you might have missed last week

1. Free expression

Police in Poland are searching for a man who farted loudly when asked what he thought of the president. The man, arrested at the time and later released on bail, failed to show up at a Warsaw court. "Such a case of disrespect is taken very seriously," a court official said.

2. Local politics

Pubs in Bremen, Germany, are being fitted with polling booths to try to counter voter apathy. Christian Weber, of the Bremen Social Democratic Party, said: "We want to give elections more of an event feel."

3. Great escape

Two kangaroos escaped from a children's reform centre in Lyons, astonishing onlookers as they bounced through the countryside. It took 20 policemen, helped by sniffer dogs and firemen, to capture the runaways.

4. Into bondage

Three gunmen in Stone Mountain, Atlanta, used furry handcuffs and leg-irons to restrain workers at a sex shop they were robbing. The masked men escaped on foot with $230 in cash. No one was injured.

5. Bouncer rage

Paul Morgan, a 29-year-old conflict management trainer, has been jailed for driving his jeep through the doors of a nightclub in Exeter. Earlier, he had warned the bouncers who threw him out: "I'll make sure you show me some respect." Morgan admitted he needs anger management lessons.
