Battering ram

Gavin Thomas Conroy, aged 20, of Barnett Close, pleaded guilty to drunk and disorderly behaviour on 11 August. Judy Morris, prosecuting, told South Somerset magistrates that Conroy had been drinking wine with his girlfriend and started arguing.

She said: "They were walking along Larkhill Road, still arguing, when the police were called. Then, when Conroy walked past a transit van, he punched at it, striking it."

He was originally arrested on a charge of criminal damage, but the van was so battered anyway that it was impossible to tell if he had damaged it.

Conroy was ordered to pay £20 towards costs.

Wrong signal

A search-and-rescue operation, launched after a lifeguard said he saw a body floating off St Just, Cornwall, ended when a lifeboat found a 2ft 6in inflatable copy of Po, the Teletubby. Falmouth coastguards said: "It was an easy mistake to make, except for the antenna coming out of its head."
