Where were you?

Published 04 September 2006

Five things you might have missed last week

1. Speed daemon

In an unprecedented case of traffic law violation, a Melbourne tram driver was given an £85 fine and three points after he was clocked doing 57 in a 40km/h zone.

2. At home with Bush

Salford resident Graham Borg has caused quite a stir by clipping the bushes in his front garden into Bushes. Borg spent weeks shaping the shrubbery into giant faces and has named them George W Bush and Kate Bush, after the US president and the iconic 1970s singer. He said: "I just came home and did it. There was no reason for it really, I guess I must be a bit of an artist at heart."

3. Double standards

A Brazilian waiter who was shot in the leg trying to prevent a street robbery of a woman as she left a bank in Rio turned out to be a convicted robber on the run. He was arrested in hospital.

4. Upstaging the corpse

Two musicians performing at a funeral in the Dutch town of Vorden were killed by a freak bolt of lightning. Three others were injured as more than 100 mourners watched in horror.

5. Lesbian Barbie

Toy manufacturer Mattel is threatening to sue Brazilian artist Karin Schwarz for artwork that portrays Barbie as a lesbian, unless she closes her exhibition. A Mattel spokes-person said: "Barbie is 46 years old. She should be respected."
