Summer arts diary

Pop superstar Madonna may be many things, but she's not one of those Americans who get all misty-eyed about the Emerald Isle. The singer has decided not to include Dublin on the current European leg of her world tour. Why? Well, I hear that she was most put out by the heavy downpour that delayed the start of her first Irish concert, at Slane Castle, near Dublin, in 2004.

"Madonna is most particular about rain getting on her act, and she was furious," says my man holding the conical boob tube. "There's a pretty good chance that Ireland will be off her agenda for a good while to come."

Remember Tracey Ullman? The British comedienne who is even bigger in America (she holds the joint record of the most ever Emmy wins by a woman)? Now she's poised for a career departure - knitting. Yes, our Tracey has a book out in October called Knit 2 Together: patterns and stories for serious knitting fun. Apparently she took up the pastime aged four and has produced loads of scarves. You couldn't, as my fellow columnist Richard Littlejohn would say, make it up.

Further to my report last week that Mischa Barton of The OC is in talks with British TV execs, I gather she has not given up on the idea of taking to the stage. Barton has been having talks with this column's old chum Sonia Friedman, the theatre producer and star of Channel 4's The Play's the Thing.

Good news for autumn. Jeremy Paxman is bringing out a new book, on the British monarchy. Can't wait.
