And not a drop to drink

Patrick McCrossan, 45, was confronted by a man who ignored his iPod and phone and demanded his 40p bottle of water, saying: "I'm having that."

A smartly dressed City worker in his twenties suddenly approached him during his sweltering journey on the Northern Line and told him to hand it over. When McCrossan refused, the man grabbed the bottle and drank from it until the train reached Bank. While other passengers looked on the man got off and walked away.

McCrossan, from Stockwell, said: "I was taken aback."

Thrifty living

I write the list. The next day I get fish from the market and meat from my local butcher, which is the truly thrifty way to buy meat. Total cost: £23. For seven people. Over seven nights. Then I go to Lidl. My luck is in. There are no hideous deformed people ranging round the shopping trolley area. I stick to my list. £77.60. I bless the day I discovered Lidl.
