Tough on grime

The Lib Dems faced huge political and financial embarrassment yesterday after the businessman who gave them £2.4m was told he was facing jail. The development will revive speculation that the party may have to repay the biggest single donation in its history.

Michael Brown, 40, was remanded in custody after pleading guilty at Southwark Crown Court, London, to perjury and obtaining a passport by deception. He admitted making a false claim to the Passport Office when he said he lost his previous passport in a washing machine.

Keeping it regular

Ian Yeomans was supposed to cover the Gloucestershire village of South Cerney from a police station three miles away, but the job did not come with a car.

The parish council suggested that Mr Yeomans use the hourly bus services. But Gloucester police said he would not be allowed to until the health and safety implications had been examined.
