Five things you might have missed last week

1. Smell that

Scientists in Australia have discovered that dingo urine has powerful properties as a kangaroo repellent. They hope to reproduce it commercially for use in keeping the marsupials away from roads, farms and gardens.

2. Best in show

Two stallholders at the Royal Norfolk Show were questioned by police and later fined £80 each for displaying T-shirts bearing the slogan "Bollocks to Blair". They were told it was legal to sell the pro-hunting T-shirts, but not to display them.

3. Better safe

The post office in Lennon, Michigan (pop: 517) was evacuated after a letter sent from India began leaking brown powder. A postal worker was quarantined and scrubbed down while a hazardous materials team tested the letter for anthrax and other chemicals, but nothing was found. Locals have suggested it was curry powder.

4. Mein's a pint

English football fans in Germany drank nearly 2.2 million pints of beer during the World Cup games against Trinidad and Tobago and Ecuador. Many pubs in Cologne, where England drew with Sweden, ran out of beer both in bottles and barrels.

5. Family fare

A judge banned the US navy from using sonar equipment during anti-submarine warfare training exercises off Hawaii because of fears that the noise would "kill, injure or disturb many marine species", notably whales. Forty warships and six submarines from eight countries were due to be involved in the exercise.
