Editor's Letter

John Kampfner

Published 12 June 2006

The new-look New Statesman magazine launches this week.

It's bigger, with a radical new design, more features and a brilliant new culture section. Our existing team of provocative writers are joined by exciting new columnists, including Rageh Omaar, Noreena Hertz, Clive Stafford Smith and Julian Clary who will alternate with Rory Bremner's column. Our recent addition, Neighbours From Hell - the funniest take on the Downing Street soap opera - written by our mystery famous playwright, moves to a prominent new perch. Peter Wilby's must-read media column continues weekly, as does our scoop-getting Political Editor Martin Bright.

Top of our list this week:

David Cameron reveals his new affection for the public sector, stating “the war is over.” He talks about his passion for equality and redistribution. Really! He also discloses his knowledge of croquet and love of Billy Bragg - and has trouble over cockney rhyming slang. In the politics column, Martin Bright reveals that, in the loans for peerages scandal, at least one person involved in raising money for Labour may have made inappropriate approaches to potential lenders, and that charges may be brought.

In our cover piece, we have an astonishing special report by Stephen Graham which shows how the US is developing machines that kill on their own initiative. The future of war is about to change in terrifying ways. Chinese film maker Xiao Jia Gu on how young Chinese are discovering the idea of falling in love. Kira Cochrane reports on the national scandal affecting carers, while our arts lead is George Galloway on the enduring appeal of Che Guevara, and how today's politicians conspicuously lack the qualities which make him so inspiring.

Stephen Fry provides the diary... and much more...

The best of the old, plus much that is new... I hope you enjoy...
