A pensioner was startled when a goldfish fell out of his fireplace.

Bill Brooks, 65, from Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, was having dinner when the fish - thought to have been dropped by a heron perched on his chimney - fell into the fire and bounced on to the hearth. The retired mineworker placed the fish in warm water with slices of bread and it has recovered.

Terry Marsh, who runs a nearby animal rescue centre, said that the fish had a heron's beak mark on its back. "Someone might report a missing fish - but the heron could have carried him for miles," Marsh said.

Was ours the first Nativity play to have a female baby Jesus, wearing an organic cotton fairly traded vest and an environmentally friendly nappy?
