Lollipop lady Sharon Grice patrols outside her school each weekday, even though it's been closed for four months. All the pupils at Coal Clough primary, Burnley, have moved to a new school 400 yards up the road where there is no crossing patrol to see them safely over the road.

A Lancashire County Council spokesman said: "We were unsure which route the children would take to the new school. The patrol is to be moved on Monday."

A mobile phone that disintegrates in soil and turns into a flower has been unveiled by scientists. The plastic casing, containing a seed, blooms into a rose after it is buried in a garden. It will be in the shops by next Christmas, researchers at Warwick University say.
