Some train companies, including South West Trains and Thameslink, have been banning bicycles from many services, arguing that bikes occupy space needed for passengers. Cyclists protested, claiming the combination of bike and train allows door-to-door journeys that would otherwise only be possible by car. South West Trains said its "cycle policy proposal" had been circulated with an instruction that it be kept from the media "because we didn't want any outside influence on what people were thinking".
