Gurbux Singh, drunk as a skunk, desecrated the sanctity of Lord's last month. In the hallowed cricket ground, where India narrowly defeated England, he attempted to headbutt a police officer and was arrested. What a fella! I did not believe he had it in him to abuse police officers and threaten them with his superior friends. Even his language quite surprised me: "You fuck," he said to the police officer who tried to bring the drunk to order.
This boldness runs completely counter to his period as chief executive officer at the Commission for Racial Equality. His was the most unremarkable period of tenure. He lacked the courage to take on the Home Secretary's abusive references to asylum-seekers and displayed a blatant disrespect for the black and Asian population.
Last year, during the race riots in the north, Singh buried his head in the sand when Pakistani youths received prison sentences way in excess of their white counterparts for the same offences. He heaped blame and opprobrium on young Pakistanis for not integrating,when any of their attempts to join the mainstream was met with the boot and the petrol bomb.
He seemed anxious to please and be part of the establishment. Like so many of his black and Asian contemporaries, he brought nothing to the plate. My ears are cocked permanently to hear from any of them one original thought. Only darkness emanates from darkies. Here is a man pleading for blacks to join the police as part of his job - yet he treats police officers like shit.
It's similar to Ansel Wong, who is on the board of trustees of the Notting Hill Carnival Trust, which has imposed itself on the carnival movement, using the power of the mayor's office. He has now decided to ban from the carnival three costumed bands simply because they disagree with him. And whom does he expect to help him keep everything working smoothly and safely on the streets of Notting Hill during the bank holiday? The Metropolitan Police. How has he treated the police to date? With the same respect that Singh has shown them. For Wong as for Singh, the police either do what these authoritarians say - or else they are "fucks".
