Research to mark the 100th anniversary of the Highway Code, showed that the warning signs for side winds was perceived by 5 per cent of motorists as meaning "kite-flying area ahead". Three in five thought a sign warning of cattle ahead indicated an area infected with foot-and-mouth disease.
