Believing in Britain

Bill Greenwell

Published 11 September 2000

William Hague launched a "mini-manifesto", Believing in Britain, at the start of the new school term

My pencils are sharp as a razor

I'm wearing a cap coz it fits

In a red, white and very blue blazer

I'm giving the nurse all my nits

My satchel is smooth English leather

My bottom is fresh and untanned

In the playground my gang sticks together

And draws a clear line in the sand

There are lessons on Europe we're axing

But our class offers these guarantees:

No deadheads and nothing too taxing

And nice crusty scabs on our knees

I've ironed my homework and pressed it

So my teachers may pass it around

And what was its title? You guessed it -

"A Day in the Life of a Pound"
