A stabbing victim was saved when his drink-enlarged liver got in the way of the blade and protected other vital organs, a court was told yesterday.

John Emslie's knowledge of railways was encyclopaedic, although his main interest lay in the north-east of Scotland. As well as the Great North of Scotland Railway Association, he was a member of the Stephenson Locomotive Society, and supported many other railway groups, including the Highland, Caledonian and Glasgow and South Western railway societies.
A meticulous record-keeper, he had rooms full of plans and documents and up to 40,000 photographic negatives, but he was in no sense a train-spotter. - Times (Francis Harvey)
