John Emslie's knowledge of railways was encyclopaedic, although his main interest lay in the north-east of Scotland. As well as the Great North of Scotland Railway Association, he was a member of the Stephenson Locomotive Society, and supported many other railway groups, including the Highland, Caledonian and Glasgow and South Western railway societies.
