Last month, the mother of a friend was given an appointment for a hip replacement. The surgeon said if she waited until 2001 the hip would have disintegrated irretrievably. So they went private.
The operation was performed within ten days. The surgeon was an NHS surgeon, the operation took place in an NHS hospital with NHS equipment, and she recovered in a public NHS ward. - Guardian (Ian Stirling)
