John Gunn, leader of the Scottish Timber Growers' Association, has a solution to save heating costs in every country home in Scotland. "I have every sympathy for people of rural Scotland who are having to pay so much more for their home heating oil. Why rely on kerosene, an expensive and limited source of energy, when they have ample supplies of biomass fuel within easy reach?" The post-war replanting of Scotland's forests is now coming up for harvest. Here is the ultimate renewable energy resource, which is cost-effective and accessible. "It is time to install a wood-burning stove," he argues.

Raymond Fraser, an Edinburgh advocate, is to stand trial after being accused of stealing silk cravats from a city-centre store. A report has been submitted to the procurator fiscal and will come to court this year. "I might represent myself and bring all my old charm back to the courts. It will be fun, if not a little strange to be in the dock," he smiles. Mr Fraser has already been reprimanded and suspended three times by the Faculty of Advocates, the last time for entering the wrong plea for a client at Stirling Sheriff Court.
