Excavations which will re-open the Union Canal through Edinburgh could also provide a flat football pitch for Wester Hailes. Plans have been unveiled by Miller Civil Engineering to use tonnes of spoil dug out from the route of the canal, which runs through the estate and is to be restored to its former glory there, to level off the field at the old Hailes Quarry site. An official football pitch would be created,replacing the uneven grassed area.

Strathclyde Police has just increased its cash awards to members of the public who tip them off. The rate has gone up from £50 to £75. DI Michael Lynch, explaining the new tariff, says: "We do not stipulate either an arrest or conviction. It is more a matter of the calibre of the information received." For really important criminal intelligence far more can be paid. Rewards are increasingly being offered by companies and individuals who have been robbed. DI Lynch added: "Nobody can earn a living from passing on information to my colleagues but £75 can come in handy for many households in the West of Scotland."
