A top gynaecologist who fondled his female patients after putting them into a trance was recently struck off the medical register. Darwish Hasan Darwish (52) hypnotised a number of women who came to him for specialist treatment over a ten-year period. The consultant, who helped pioneer a new fertility treatment, was convicted on ten charges of indecent assault. Earlier the committee heard how Darwish had prayed [sic] on his victims.

The BBC has defended Newsnight Scotland (a 20-minutes opt-out in the main programme for Scottish viewers), after it was revealed that it has lost 22,000 of its 99,000 viewers. The compromise has been criticised for not offering a proper Scottish news service, while damaging the quality of Newsnight. "The key thing for us is that we are not losing many viewers on Newsnight Scotland," said editor Blair Jenkins. A fifth is not statistically significant.

The Erotic Print Society proposes to award its own honours just before the official New Year (or New Millennium) honours issued by Buckingham Palace. They are basing their awards on the 16th-century Turkish medal known as the Order of Chastity. "The honour comes in three classes, but we have not yet worked out whether the First Class is better than the Third Class or even what is 'better' in matters of chastity," explained the EPS's man in Scotland.
