Connoisseurs will have their taste buds tickled at the Highland Trade Fair in Aviemore. Ashers Bakers of Nairn will be launching a range of whisky-flavoured cakes, with Highland, Island and Speyside varieties. The new cake range has been nominated for the Gift of the Year award. "We should win. The judges have been bribed with plenty of samples," said a member of the team.

Modern-day archaeologists have unearthed the ancient crumbs of the rich larder which Scottish nobles, courtiers and merchants dined on. Under the area that will become the home of the Scottish Parliament at Holyrood, the sumptuous menu enjoyed by the rich has been laid bare. Ingredients included sturgeon, porpoise, olives and exotic spices.

One of the most unusual subjects surveyed by the Royal Commission staff is the yard of George Sutherland and Sons, monumental masons of Albert Place, Galashiels. Here an extensive collection of machinery survives along with a sculpture studio and showroom; the whole complex is powered by a Lister engine and dates from the early 19th century. It is to be demolished and swept away for parking spaces for social workers.
