The biggest Land Rover dealer in the north, MacHaig, Rennie and Lindsay of Inverness, is being plagued by a crow that has developed a singular taste for the windscreen wiper blades and window seals of Land Rovers, Discoveries and Range Rovers - but not those of other cars. Rumour has it that it has been specially trained by Toyota. The TV naturalist Terry Nutkins was called in to address the problem - and had his own Land Rover wiper blades chewed up by the crow. The Northern Constabulary has issued a description.
Sir Charles MacLean of Dunconnel, Bart, proprietor of the Creggans Inn on Loch Fyne in Argyll, has decided to impose a toll on diners at his very grand restaurant. The £1 charge goes towards his campaign to bring back the walrus to Scottish waters. He explains: "The last native walrus was shot in 1840 and since then only the occasional migrant turns up. None has bred on Scottish shores for 150 years. They eat only shellfish and are gentle and agreeable. They will enhance the soul of the loch if we can bring them back." Scottish Natural Heritage, the state agency responsible for ecological matters, denies the walrus is a native species.
