Pragmatic, not dogmatic

Published 11 December 1998

George Cowley says it is dogmatic to say that God is not (Letters, 4 December). No more so than to say the same about Father Christmas or Mother Goose or any other imaginary supernatural being. The insistence on so-called "open-minded agnosticism" is just as dogmatic as the pragmatic presumption of atheism. Anyway, which god are we talking about? Believers deny 99 out of 100 gods; unbelievers only deny one more. It is time to put away childish things and grow up.
