The trouble with religion

Published 27 November 1998

According to Robin Oakley-Hill (Letters, 20 November), the only serious argument against religion is that, by comforting the poor, it allows the rich to mess them around - roughly the argument of Marx and Proudhon a century and a half ago. But surely a rather more serious argument against religion is that it isn't true - the point is not that God is evil, but that God is not.
